C Series Soft Termination MLCCs

TDK C Series Soft Termination MLCCs are designed for use in applications where significant board flex may occur, especially in safety or high-reliability designs. Safety-critical automotive applications such as ABS, ESP, airbags, and battery line applications commonly utilize TDK Soft Termination Capacitors. Conventional termination materials used in standard MLCCs are inflexible, giving vibration, shock, or thermal expansion and contraction the potential to crack or shear the solder joint between the component and the circuit board. In automotive applications, which are exposed to shock and vibration and to extreme temperature swings, this can result in higher failure rates. TDK C Series Soft Termination MLCCs provide very high resistance to mechanical and thermal stress to ensure the component can meet the requirements of automotive OEMs.

Open Mode

TDK Open Mode is a type of MLCC in which the gap between the terminal electrode and the internal electrode on the opposing terminal electrode side (called L-Gap) is longer than that of regular products. By making the overlapping portion of the opposing internal electrodes shorter, it is ensured that the opposing electrodes do not overlap at places where cracks may occur. Due to this, the risk of short-circuit can be reduced even if cracks should occur.

Flex Crack Countermeasure MLCCs

TDK offers special types of Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitor (MLCC) products with redundancy in design in order to avoid short-circuit failures and improve the reliability of equipment. When a crack occurs on the element of an MLCC due to PCB depaneling, screw fastening, or shock from vibration or a drop, it may lead to a short-circuit failure. Among failure modes, there are open-circuit failures and short-circuit failures. Short-circuit failures can even cause problems such as abnormal heat generation, smoking, or ignition of the MLCC. It is vital to take measures against them, particularly in equipment requiring reliability. TDK offers many different MLCC products for flex crack countermeasures.

C Series High Capacitance MLCCs

TDK C Series High Capacitance MLCCs feature precision technologies that enable the use of multiple thinner ceramic dielectric layers. Composed of only ceramics and metals, TDK C Series Capacitors offer dependable performance, exhibiting virtually no degradation even when subjected to temperature extremes. The monolithic structure ensures superior mechanical strength and reliability. These MLCCs are available in a range of capacitance values, numerous case sizes, and in temperature coefficients of X5R, X6S, X7R, X7S, X7T, X8R, Y5V, and C0G (NP0).
